I had read elsewhere that the majority of blogs fall by the wayside after six months. I suspect that major reasons for would be lack of focus and an under-appreciation of what it takes to create a good blog that others will read. Blogging is definitely a discipline and there's much to learn.

Hi Andrew - I agree completely. There are so many avenues for publishing that I think people are having to split up their writing time.
I still believe, however, that blogs are the best venue for publishing clear, thoughtful commentary on your topic of interest, and that blogs are the best marketing tool for businesses. Much as I love Twitter, you just can't really write a complete and thorough review of ANYTHING in 140 characters or less!

facebook goes unmentioned in the times article on blogs.. it's expected, they missed the fraudulent case on the Iraq war too...
what does it say about the sudden, tectonic shift in behavior that I came to this blog post from your facebook post?
are blogs quiet because people are not writing, or are they just writing somewhere else?
